Unificada Teneria-Manzanani is a very small community on the outskirts of Sorata, Bolivia. It has a population of 92 people and it has a poverty rate of 80 percent. Their primary source of income is agriculture.

The situation in Unificada Teneria Manzanani is a reflection of a global problem where more than two billion people in the world do not have access to hygienic bathroom facilities. Combining the fact that the primary source of income for the people in Teneria is agriculture, and that they don't have a regulated form of waste disposal results in a host of health-related issues due to inadequate sanitization. Open defecation pollutes the crops and drinking water, which endangers the health of not only the 92 people living in Teneria but also those who consume the crops produced by this community. Other local species are affected by this as well, which disrupts the ecological balance of the environment.
